Fez, Meknes & Volubilis
Beginning in Fes, the world's most complete Islamic medieval city, we explore the souks and crowded alleyways of its ancient medina in Fes el Bali as well as Fes el Jdid and the Royal Palace. We make an excursion to the sites and medinas of the old Moorish city of Meknes, capital city of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Near here we also find the holy city of Moulay Idriss and the impressive remains of Roman Volubilis, noted for its mosaics, basilica and complete triumphal arch.
Merzouga Sand Sea & Todra Gorge
Heading south across the flanks of the Middle Atlas, we stay on the edge of the Sahara, close to the great shifting Sand Sea of Merzouga, where there is a chance to explore the dunes and take an optional camel ride and camp out in the desert. Next we continue past tiny palmeries and mud-brick villages to the Dades Gorge where we have time to explore the Ait Youl region on foot. Finally a dramatic drive takes through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate and Morocco's most famous kasbah, Ait Benhaddou.
The Atlantic Coast & Marrakech
Continuing west we cross the Anti Atlas mountain range to Taroudant where we explore the remote Igherm region and the traditional berber town of Tafroute. Our journey continues along Morocco's Atlantic coastline to Agadir then onto the white-washed walls of Essaouira - a delightful old port blending southern European, French and Arab cultures. Finally we spend two fabulous days in Marrakech. Its animated Djemma-el-Fna Square is the 'Heart of Morocco' a focal point where Berbers and Arabs come to exchange news, haggle and trade in jelabahs, carpets and spices.
