From Steppe to Gobi
From the capital Ulaan Baatar, we head out across the steppe, eventually arriving at our encampment at the foot of Hogno Khan where we stay in traditional gers (nomadic felt tents). There's the opportunity for short walks or maybe even a visit to a local ger. Our next stop is at Karakorum, from where Genghis Khan led his conquering nomadic hordes out of Asia on horseback. We visit Erdene-Zu, Mongolia's first Buddhist monastery before turning south, the steppe giving way to a vast emptiness as we head deep into the Gobi desert. We hope to meet friendly nomadic families grazing their herds and may even be invited into their gers to try a bowl of airag (fermented mare's milk!). At Bayanzag we visit the site where dinosaur eggs have been found and see the Moltsog sand dunes, before continuing to our last camp in the foothills of the Gurvansaikhan Mountains.
To the Edge of Siberia
Flying back to Ulaan Baatar, we head through the Terelj National Park to Khan Khentii, a Special Protected Area where our ger camp is in a strikingly beautiful setting. There are a number of easy day walks or you may wish to simply relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. There is also the chance to try some gentle rafting on the Tuul River (optional).
