Hong Kong & Rural South
As well as a guided orientation tour, we have plenty of free time to explore the fascinating and dramatically located city of Hong Kong. Taking an overnight train to Guilin, we continue our journey by riverboat along the Li River. Admiring the strange limestone outcrops that have inspired so many Chinese poets and artists over the centuries, we make our way to beautiful Yangshuo. There are plenty of opportunities for walks or bike rides into the surrounding villages.
Terracotta Warriors & Great Wall
In Xian, we explore the Old Muslim Quarter with its narrow lanes and wonderful wooden mosque, and take time to visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The highlight of our visit is the site of the excavations of the Terracotta Warriors. An archaeologist's dream, the site contains several thousand life-size models of warriors, horses and chariots - many made of bronze or leafed in gold - all buried to protect the Qin dynasty emperors in the after world. Reaching Beijing by train, we explore the famous Tiananmen Square and the maze of palaces and gardens that make up the adjoining 'Forbidden City'.
Walk the wall
At Shanhaiguan the Great Wall begins: thrusting out into the sea, it's known as the 'Old Dragon's Head'. From here, we take an easy walk along the wall to Jiaoshan. At Panjiakou, we take a boat excursion on the lake. Here, the ancient defensive wall rises and falls along precipitous mountain ridges, crossing the water several times. At Luowenyu, we make another scenic walk before continuing to the Eastern Qing Tombs. After admiring the red walls, golden roofs and marble bridges of the Tombs, we drive to a point where we join the Great Wall to hike into Huangyaguan before perhaps the most beautiful section of the Great Wall is walked from Jinshanling towards Simatai. After a final night in Jinshanling we return to Beijing.
