Thailand's North & Tribal Villages
From Bangkok, we head north to explore picturesque Chiang Mai, before boarding a longtail boat on the Kok River to Chiang Rai. A ferry takes us across the Mekong to Ban Houei Sai in Laos, and before exploring Indochina's great artery in earnest, we visit some outlying tribal villages. Travelling by slow boat, we follow the Mekong along its winding course downstream, as it meanders through a wilderness of rugged beauty.
Sacred Caves & Temples
Along the way we discover the Pak Ou caves, sacred to the Buddhists, and pass isolated villages before disembarking at Luang Prabang. This picturesque mountain town nestles on the upper Mekong: we visit the Royal Palace and admire the strikingly beautiful architecture of the wats. Then, flying south, we spend a relaxing day sightseeing in the sleepy Laotian capital of Vientiane.
Glories of Angkor Wat
Flying on to Cambodia, the first stop is Phnom Penh - a fascinating and vibrant capital risen from the ashes of war. A road journey through tranquil villages takes us to Siem Reap, our base for explorations of the ancient city of Angkor. Built some 800 years ago by the all-conquering Khmer kings, Angkor boasts the greatest concentration of religious monuments in the world. The five tall towers of Angkor Wat itself - every inch adorned with superb carvings - are mirrored in the waters of wide moats: the effect is simply stunning.
