This is an exciting and well paced itinerary combining Cambodia and Vietnam.
You will spend just over 2 weeks visiting some of the highlights of South East Asia. From the Temples of Angkor and the city of Phnom Penh you’ll travel into Vietnam by boat via the scenic and vibrant Mekong River. In Vietnam you’ll have time to experience the floating markets and daily life of the people who live in the Mekong Delta before exploring bustling Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). You’ll end your trip with a few days of well earned relaxation on one of Vietnam’s many great beaches.
The contrast of the two neighbouring countries is fascinating and travelling by boat and rise the subtleties of that change is more readily apparent than for those flying over the top.
Angkor is obviously one of the wonders of the ancient world and I have yet to meet any one underwhelmed by the experience of visiting the majestic ruins here. Our guides here are crucial and we think ours will really make your trip. There are some great hotels here too and the FCC Angkor is a great little place to come back too after a hot day’s site-seeing!
Exploring the recent history of Cambodia in Phnom Penh can be a harrowing experience but one that few miss. Phnom Penh itself can be an eye opening and interesting experience.
If you have more time, Kep on the southern coast, is one of our favourite South East Asia destinations for its laid back and sleepy feel and of course, the amazing crab!
Busy and enterprising Chau Doc is a total contrast to sleepy Cambodia and the hotel here is in a great spot to see the full extend of the river life at this end of the Mekong. The markets at Can Tho are real and working too. An upgrade is available here to spend a night onboard the Bassac Cruise on which Rick Stein stayed in his excellent series Asian food. The food is unsurprisingly excellent!
After a few days in crazy Saigon, shopping for bargains, crouching in the Cu Chi Tunnels and visiting some of the best restaurants in the world, we suggest a Vietnamese beach. The one to go for is totally dependent on the weather – but it with be Hoi An, Nha Trang, Mui Ne or the gorgeous Phou Quoc Island, there is plenty to choose from!
