Sri Lanka, the ’island of serendipity’, is a tropical island that lies in the Indian Ocean, to the south east of India. The central highlands, dotted with tea plantations and pretty hill stations, rise to 2424m. They offer a lush, cool retreat from the tropical plains below, whilst the coastline boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, lapped by warm blue waters and fringed by palm trees. The national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are home to a huge variety of bird life and animals including elephant and leopard. Those interested in culture will marvel at the island’s abundant ruins, temples and ancient cities, not least being Polonnaruwa, which has some of the most interesting, extensive and best-preserved Buddhist remains in Asia.

Sri Lanka is predominantly Buddhist, with around 70% of the population following this philosophy. The Buddhists of Sri Lanka follow the Theravada (small vehicle) school of Buddhism, which is also practised in Thailand and Myanmar. The majority of the population is Sinhalese, though Tamils, who are of Indian descent, make up around 20% of the population and are mainly centred on the north and east coasts.
