There is no doubt that the heart of the Silk Route is the Stans, and, in particular, Uzbekistan. Just the mention of the names of Samarkand, Bukhara or Khiva conjure up the “mythical” trade route and it was the world’s greatest trade route before sea power assigned it to the backwaters of history. That is about to all change again, as China begins its massive new project of the New Silk Road.
That is what this trip is all about the connectivity of Asia, the connection between the Caucasus, (Georgia and Azerbaijan), Central Asia, (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan) and, lastly, China and the great deserts of Western China. The eastern terminus of the Silk Road is Xi’an, but on this journey we add on a trip to the north and to the Great Wall and Beijing.
