This journey is very nearly the whole of the Silk Route with just the exception of Turkey. It is, therefore, perfect for the many who have already explored the delights of Turkey giving plenty of time to get to grips with the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Stans and, finally, China.
A three part journey through some of the planet’s most spectacular scenery and most diverse cultures. Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan make up the Caucasus and are a wonderful balance of ancient Christianity and modern, oil rich, secular Islam. Crossing the Caspian, the deserts and rivers of Central Asia are the historic homes of the great city states and empires of the Stans; Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand are names that conjure up this history. Climbing into the Tian Shan of Kyrgyzstan, we pass through the Torugart Pass and on to the third part, the vast country of China.
China is the reason the Silk Route exists historically and into the future. Today, travellers can still travel the route traditionally, but with China’s new Silk Road Project just beginning, it is time to watch this space because massive change is just around the corner.
