Located on the terrace of Mount Etna and a cable car ride away from pretty beaches, once a former capital of Byzantine Sicily, Taormina is a well preserved medieval town with a wealth of cultural attractions. It has been the destination of choice for a number of writers, artists, aristocrats and royalty over the centuries. Attractions include Teatro Greco, a Greek amphitheatre built in the 3rd century BC and Vila Comunale, hanging gardens of tropical plants and delicate flowers.
