Riga is the largest, most vibrant city in the Baltic region and its history and architecture reflect the influences of Russia and Germany in Latvia. The town is split into two parts, on the east and west banks of the River Daugava. Riga’s Old Town, with its many medieval buildings and German architecture dating from the 17th century, is in contrast to the canal, open parks and elegant 19th century boulevards elsewhere in the city. Riga also has one of the finest concentrations of Art Nouveau architecture in Europe. A visit to the 13th century Romanesque Dome Cathedral should not be missed and the view from the top of the spire of St Peters Church is stunning.
