The beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus has a rich and varied history, pretty villages and wonderful scenery. The charming west coast town of Pafos, lying beneath the Troodos Mountains, is set around an attractive harbour whose picturesque open air fish restaurants line a quayside of fishing boats and pleasure craft. Pafos became capital of Cyprus under the successors of Alexander the Great, the Ptolemies, and it continued as the island’s first city for more than seven centuries, retaining its importance under Roman rule. Today a UNESCO World Heritage site, the area abounds in historical and archaeological treasures including the underground Tombs of Kings, St. Pauls’ Pillar and the mosaics of Nea Paphos which are among the most beautiful in the world.
