In ancient times Padova was one of the wealthiest cities in Northern Italy and remained so until the Lombards destroyed it in the 7th century. The city quickly recovered and in 1222, became one of the first university cities in Europe. Visitors are attracted to the city by its medieval heritage, which includes frescoes painted by Giotto in the early 14th century at the Arena Chapel and the reconstructed town hall, called Il Salone due to its impressive size.
