Located in the Basilicata region in southeast Italy, the ancient city of Matera is a unique example of a cultural tradition and civilisation stretching back to the Neolithic age. Natural caves were transformed into a labyrinth of houses and Byzantine churches so that today distinguishing the natural rock formations and the architecture created by the ancient inhabitants is often impossible. Relatively unknown until recently, Matera is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
