The city of Malaga flourished during the Muslim era but in later years succumbed to famine and civil war. Today the city is the gateway to Andalucia and the Costa Del Sol coastline. Cultural highlights of the city include the Alcazaba, a Muslim palace that dominates the city centre and the 16th century cathedral, built on the site of the former main mosque.
