Situated on the far north eastern tip of Norway at the ’top of the world’, the little town of Kirkenes is set beside a vast fjord 400km inside the Arctic Circle. The area offers an excellent chance of spotting the natural wonder of the northern lights that this region is most famous for. Close to the border with Russia and Finland, the town’s highlights include the Border Country Museum, with exhibits telling the story of war and peace in the borderlands, including the town’s strategic role in the second world war, plus exhibitions from a local Sami artist. Local excursions include husky sledding, wildlife safaris, fjord cruises, and snowmobiling.
