Kemi is a town and municipality located at the mouth of the Kemijoki river by Bothnian Bay in the Lapland region of northern Finland. The town was founded in 1869 by royal decree due to its proximity to a deep water harbour. With a population of about 22,000, the town’s main industries involve two large paper and wood pulp mills and a chromium mine, the only one in Europe, which supplies the Outokumpu ferrochrome plant in the nearby city of Tornio. Kemi is also the home of the world’s largest snow castle, which is reconstructed every year with different architecture and usually located by the inner harbour of Kemi.
