Situated in the middle of a group of mountains known as de syv fjell, Bergen is also known as ’the city among the seven mountains’. During the Middle Ages, Bergen was one of the most important cities of the Hanseatic League when Saxon merchants settled in the quarter of the town known as Bryggen. Today this part of the town, Stifeltsen Bryggen is on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites. Sights also include the Rosenkrantz Tower, Troldhaugen, once the home of Edward Grieg, the Leprosy Museum and the Hanseatic Museum. Cable car services connect Bergen with the hill-tops of the surrounding mountains.
