While the Icelandic capital impresses with historic architecture and a vibrant creative scene, this is so much more than a city break. On a trio of included excursions you’ll cruise out to spot giant whales, enjoy a soak in the famous Blue Lagoon and even head out on Iceland’s iconic Golden Circle route. This jeep tour will see you between everything from national-park treasures to cascading waterfalls and explosive geysers.
Day 1: UK/Reykjavik
Flying out to Reykjavik’s airport, an included transfer will see you to your central accommodation, delightfully Scandi chic in its pinewood flooring. What’s more, housed in 18th-century buildings on one of the city’s oldest streets, it’s perfectly positioned to explore. After taking in Reykjavik’s colourful historic core, be sure to turn your attention to its innovative present. The Icelandic capital’s creative scene plays out over lively bars, dining experiences and a full suite of modernist architecture. The spectacularly staggered Hallgrímskirkja church is a special highlight. Lastly, we also highly recommend the cured Arctic char or Icelandic blue mussels at your hotel’s restaurant – a locals’ favourite.
Day 2: Golden Circle jeep tour
Waking early, you’ll be treated to a full-day jeep excursion, accompanied by an expert driver guide. You’ll head out on the famous Golden Circle route, beginning with Thingvellir National Park. Sited on a great continental divide, its dramatic valleys make for a spectacular backdrop to its thousand-year-old heritage; evocative stone ruins evidence what was the world’s parliament. It’s then on to Gullfoss – often described as Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall – and Strokkur, a geyser whose clockwork-regular outbursts reach up to 20 metres high. You’ll then test the jeep’s capabilities as you head back to Reykjavik, driving over craggy highlands, glacial drifts and rushing waterways. There's also the optional extra to ride a snowmobile over a glacier – available year-round.
Day 3: Whale-watching cruise
Today you’ll set out from Reykjavik’s harbour on a whale-watching cruise. But, the waters around the Icelandic capital are not only a favourite among humpbacks and minke whales; it’s possible to spot everything from harbour porpoises to white-beaked dolphins. If you’re lucky, they’ll even put on an acrobatic display. Then, returning to Reykjavik, you’ll have some time to explore further. Perhaps take in its sculpture gardens, cathedral architecture and superb Museum of Photography before sampling the city’s famous nightlife.
Day 4: The Blue Lagoon & depart for UK
After a final breakfast this morning, an included transfer will see you out for a soak in the Blue Lagoon. Shrouded in mists and ringed by volcanic rock, its bright-azure, geothermally heated waters are the perfect pre-flight tonic. Indeed, fully relaxed, an included transfer will then see you the airport for your flight home.
