Tromso is at the centre of the northern aurora zone, and dazzling celestial displays circle the sky above the city with great and regular abandon. Anyone who’s been to Tromso will assure you that there’s more to the city than what goes on above, with an animated street scene and creative culture reflecting the vibrant colours of the pulsating Aurora Borealis. Our ever-popular short break, featured below, includes Northern Lights hunt to a remote camp, while we've also left ample free time to add on a host of optional activities, from husky safaris to distillery tours. Browse our comprehensive choice of excursions for the full range of exciting opportunities available while in Tromso.
Day 1: Tromso: Exploring the city
Fly from London Gatwick to Tromso, taking your included shuttle transfer to the city centre with the drop-off point close to all of our featured hotels. Depending on your arrival time, spend the rest of the day exploring the centre on foot, visiting the city’s museums and galleries – the Tromsø Kunstforening, home to an exceptional collection of Norwegian contemporary art, is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. So too is Polaria Museum, with a cinema where short films of the Northern Lights can be viewed in comfort. Tromsø’s picturesque harbour is nearby, providing another visual feast. Later, head out to dinner at one of Tromso's many superb restaurants, then fall in with the city’s fashionable set and sample the best local brews at one of the many drinking holes. You’ll be spoilt for choice – there are more pubs per capita here than anywhere else in Norway. If your flight does get in later, then you’ll have plenty of time to explore the city on days two and three.
Days 2-3: Tromso: aurora tour & optional excursions
Tromso’s extreme northern location allows for an array of exciting excursion opportunities – from epic husky sledding to snowmobile safaris, reindeer sledding and whale watching trips. You'll have two days free to experience some of the myriad options available. And, to help you make the most of your stay, we've included an evening Aurora Safari to one of four base stations to view the Northern Lights. Your guide will select the station based on weather and wind forecasting, based on more than 15 years of experience bringing travellers to see the Lights. Once there, you’ll have a warm shelter to wrap up in, and a local host who will share their culture and history with you. The city is famous for the auroras and is widely regarded one of the world’s best places to spot them. Tromsø is also featured as one of our favourite places to see the Northern Lights.
Day 4: Depart Tromso
Depending on your departure time, take the chance for one final optional excursion. And, there can be few better ways to round off your stay than with a husky safari, riding two to a sled along frozen trails with your team of dogs yapping happily up ahead. It really is among the most exciting ways of exploring Norway’s Arctic north. In the afternoon, transfer back to the airport for your flight to London Gatwick.
