The only way to truly soak in the pristine wilderness of the vast Arctic landscape is to head straight out into it. This might sound a little chilly, but there is plenty of cosiness to be found in the selection of eccentric and conventionally luxurious hotels tucked away amongst the epic landscapes. Your journey starts in Oslo, Norway’s culturally rich capital. Then you head out in the polar wilderness staying at Longyearbyen and the historic Isfjord Radio before heading home.
Days 1-2: Longyearbyen
Fly from the UK to Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s largest township. From here, transfer to the atmospheric Basecamp Trapper’s Hotel, where furs and whaling memorabilia adorn the walls, before spending the remainder of the day, and the next, exploring the town and its Arctic surrounds.
Day 3: Isfjord Radio
After breakfast you’ll meet your guide for an induction session on snowmobiles, the main form of transport in the Arctic. After the briefing, mount your vehicle and strike out on to the ice, heading west across the sublime landscape to Basecamp Isfjord Radio, stopping at various points of interest along the way. Enjoy an expedition lunch en route before arriving at Isfjord Radio - a remote boutique hotel and the last frontier before Greenland. Here you will be served a delicious arctic inspired meal, and you can try a warm sauna and even a quick swim in the Arctic ocean - a true sign for the Polar Adventurer.
Day 4: Barentsburg & Longyearbyen
After breakfast, it's time to head into the beautiful landscape of Spitsbergen. Our guide chooses the day’s route depending on the weather and snow conditions. If the weather is good, you will have a change to visit the Russian mining town Barentsburg, which is a home for 300 people. Explore the life of an isolated arctic town and learn about the mining history of Spitsbergen, before returning to Longyearbyen and the Basecamp Trapper's Hotel.
Day 5: Longyearbyen
After you wake amid the Arctic landscape for the final time on this holiday, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before transferring to the airport. Board your fight back to the UK and continue your journey home.
