Candes-St-Martin sits on the point of confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers and has a charming cobbled village square, complete with 12th century church and an excellent local restaurant. A short walk along the river is Montsoreau, an old river port from the medieval period, when the Loire was a major trade route. It’s château, setting of a famous Dumas novel, is the only one in the Loire valley built in the riverbed itself.
