South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is a British Overseas Territory situated in the southern Atlantic Ocean. South Georgia has a very small non-permanent population in its settlement of Grytviken. The South Sandwich Islands are uninhabited.

When to Go

The best time to visit is December to February, which is summer.

Getting There and Around

The islands are very remote and isolated. However, South Georgia can be visited as part of the itinerary on certain Antarctica expedition cruises. It particularly appeals to wildlife lovers and birders, and to people with an interest in the Shackleton story.

Things to do in South Georgia

  1. Commune with king penguins. South Georgia is home to huge colonies of 100,000 penguins or more. The island is also a breeding ground for elephant seals and fur seals.
  2. Immerse yourself in the history of the polar explorers and whalers in South Georgia's museum
  3. Visit the grave of Ernest Shackleton whose body was returned to South Georgia to be buried
