The best from myWanderlust this week

For we are young and free. Aren't we?

It’s Australia Day tomorrow. I’m celebrating the day as I have done ever since I moved here with my annual Australia Day BBQ.

My English neighbours found it a bit strange at first – barbequing in the middle of winter is not something they see much of in this part of the world. But I persisted and now it has become something of an institution on our street. Last year I taught them all how to do
the Tim Tam Slam.

Part of my mission is to introduce my neighbours to new Australian beers and discourage them from buying Fosters down at Sainsburys, even when they have it on offer for £8 a carton. To that end I wandered into the Australia Shop in Covent Garden and paid over the odds for a six pack of Coopers and another of Little Creatures. I hope they appreciate it.

I was pleased to note that DrG is marking Australia Day in his own way with an Experience he posted about taking MrsG Down Under. (Leave it, Fintown!) It’s
about Tasmania, it’s the first of a trilogy. And you’ll find it here.

Elsewhere on Experiences, Stephanie S tells of how she was seduced by Santiago de Cuba and Joblogs tells a tale of Sufi Stoners in Northern Pakistan. You can check out both here.

Jill Cochrane is just back from Puglia in Italy and raving about Grottaglie’s street art. Markymark983 has returned from the Snaefellsness peninsula in Iceland where he had the Northern Lights all to himself. And Boffin116 just got back from Cape Town where the people were welcoming and positive and the sights and sounds awe-inspiring.

Over at the Forum, Sergeant Pluck is foaming at the mouth about the increase in APD taxes and after reading his post you will too. The Tower’s very own Daisy Cropper wants to hear about the travelling woes of vegetarians, primarily so she doesn’t feel so bad about having to eat pork and rice pudding.

Oh, and Howellsey is heading to Cuba and wants your advice on the things he must see and do.

Finally, Photography, and there’s something for everyone. Those from the Northern hemisphere  might want to check Mattyboy876’s shots from Africa and warm their chilled bones. Those from the south might want to cool down by checking out markymark983’s photos from Iceland and the Peaks in Winter. Those who just like pictures from Italy should drop by Jill Cochrane’s set of images from Puglia or GwenJones’ lot from Lucca.

Anyway, I’m off to de-ice the BBQ. Speak to you next week.
