The best from myWanderlust this week

We're building up to something big...

4 mins

It’s funny what a striking building can do for a city. I'm sure my home town of Sydney wouldn't get as much international coverage on New Year’s Eve if there was still a tram shed on Bennelong Point rather than the Opera House. And the Simeonovo District of Sofia would have far fewer visitors were it not for a house that looks like a snail that has been built there.

The Forum on myWanderlust would have been a bit lonelier too, because hmoat01’s post asking visitors about the weirdest and funniest buildings they have encountered in their travels has been the most popular. If you have a strange building you’d like to add, pop over here.

While you’re there you might also want to give Jill Frazier some tips on Copenhagen and help kim1703 find a travel companion for an adventure in November. You might want to congratulate suzycatpope for booking a spot on the Wanderlust Travel Writing seminar.

Speaking of Copenhagen, ChristianW is just back from the Danish capital, still in awe of a piece of cake and the price he paid for it. Trishd has returned from hiking in Transylvania with a new found allergy to garlic and wooden crosses and a friend who was disappointed that Dracula’s castle in Bran wasn't tacky enough. And Howellsey has been to Cuba where he spotted a Trogon. Don’t know what a Trogon is? Then it’s about time you found out.

Over at Experiences, Sundail takes us on a wet and wild tour through Waitomo Caves in New Zealand and FarawayVisions remembers her visit to the Kanba Caves in Guatemala. Boffin116’s account of a visit to Kanchanaburi War Cemetery resonated especially with me as my grandfather is buried there. He was shot down over Burma without ever seeing his daughter, my mum. I'm glad to hear that the grounds are being kept as immaculate as they were when I visited.

On a cheerier note, our Photography section is a wash with colour and movement as myWanderlusters post their best and favourite images from festivals around the world. They’re all entries in our mini-photography competition on a festive theme. While you’re there you might want to check out danny2798’s set of images from Russia, steve48’s road trip pics from a long drive along Western Australia’s coast and the riot of autumnal colours in pebbles111’s photos of Stourhead in Wiltshire.

Oh, and if you're wondering what we're building up to, Wanderlust turns 20 next Friday.

They grow up so fast.
