The best from myWanderlust this week

Are you feeling hungry?

Whether you stay that way will depend on which Experiences you read on myWanderlust this week. You see, we’ve been running a mini-writing competition on the website, asking people to regale us with their most memorable food experiences.

You’ll have noticed that we used the word ‘memorable’ rather than ‘best’ or ‘most delicious’. Like many things, a meal can be remembered with a shudder as well as a shiver of delight. And I was pleased to see myWanderlusters take up the challenge, rewarding us with tales of meals that both delighted and disgusted. Although I must say, I wasn’t expecting Simon Fenton to drag the tone down so quickly with his review of goat sphincter in Mauritania. For that – and so much more – pop over to Experiences.

Markymark983 got things jumping over on the Forum this week with his post about ‘unethical’ destinations. He wanted to know if there were any places you had avoided visiting on ethical grounds. He gives a wide berth to countries that still hunt whales. Other state political differences or a particular country’s stance on women’s rights. It’s an interesting question, thrown in to stark relief with Burma’s recent revival as a destination. Have your say here.

While you’re over at the Forum, lauraliz wants to get herself a bag that complies to easyJet’s new hand luggage restrictions. And angeltread is looking for advice on adventures for disabled travellers.

Hmoat01 is just back from Northern Ireland where the sun was out and all was well with the world. She suggests stopping in Ballintoy for an ice cream. Alan Taylor has returned from Newmarket, again, this time in fine weather. His tip? Avoid visiting when the races are on and you’ll save big time. Shoreham Boy, on the other hand, is back from Vietnam where he kayaked Halong Bay. Hardly a hidden gem, he admits, but amazing all the same.

Finally, Photography, and we have been taken on a real world tour this week. Karen Warren has posted a selection of images from UAE. Peterj2002 taunts with a huge gallery of pics from Grenada. And Shoreham-Boy takes us to Budapest and then to Halong Bay.

Things get a little chillier with actasif’s gallery of images from the Lofoten Islands in Norway and Katherine Loveless’s set from a year of fire and ice in Iceland.

Well, that’s it for this week. I was going to sign off with a tale about my most memorable meal on the road, a congealed bowl of I-don’t know-what at a bus stop in Albania. But to be honest, it’s made me a bit queasy just thinking about it.

Until next week…
