The best from myWanderlust this week

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas

8 mins

We had our first dusting of snow here at the Towers this week. A little less than a centimetre, but just enough to throw the entire transport system into chaos. I came very close to making it into the office. I got as far as Whitton before I was tossed off the train, along with everyone else, and told to catch the next one. The next one didn't come. And nor did the next one. I gave up and went home.

I stopped off at my local tax-avoiding coffee chain for one of their red cup specials. I know I shouldn’t encourage them with my business but I’m a sucker for their eggnog latte. Since I moved to the UK, it’s my little signifier that Christmas is around the corner. It used to be the appearance of cherries and the mercury pushing 40. Now it’s a sickly sweet drink that may or may not have come in contact with a coffee bean in its production. It’s funny the curve balls life throws you.

Things have been pretty quiet on myWanderlust this week too. I’m hoping it’s because you can’t tear yourself away from the fantastic Christmas offers available on the website. You could do all your Christmas shopping, right here, especially for all the travel-addicted nutters you know. And that's all of us, isn't it?

Having said that, the stuff that has been posted is of the highest quality. I particularly liked Julia69’s post over on Experiences about her visit to New Orleans. I dropped by the Big Easy just after Katrina passed through so I was interested to see if the city has recovered. Sort of, seems to be the answer. Make sure you check out this thought-provoking piece.

Over at the Forum, Liz Cleere responded to my call to arms last week and stuck up a post asking people about the places that delighted them. She got three responses. Her post asking which places disappointed got 22. I rest my case.

Also on the Forum, Sparky wants to know how you can distinguish a mossie bite from that of any other insect. JanieB is looking for a very particular marine case for her Panasonic camera. And Editor-in-Chief, Lyn, wants some destination suggestions for the next Wanderlust ‘On Assignment’ trip. I suggested popping over to North Korea to check out he unicorn lair they’ve just re-discovered, but I don’t think it’s a goer. I suspect Lyn is fearful that those attending may not be able to resist the charms of the sexiest man alive.

Over at the Photography section, there’s a new lens man in town. His name is Bruno Scanlet and he is from Belgium. He has introduced himself via three very good photo sets from India, Mozambique and the Namib desert respectively. Rhoda1 has posted some pics from Madagascar. Satkinson shares some images from the Cotswolds. And Guy Needham has posted some pics from Albania. All worth checking out.

Well, that’s it from me. Have a great weekend. I'll speak to you again next week.
