The best from myWanderlust this week

All hail Steve and Suzy

7 mins

Last week I put it all on the line and posted a photo from my travels 20 years ago. It was my tribute, of sorts, to the 20th anniversary of the first issue of Wanderlust, an event that is set to be celebrated all around the world next month. I also asked other myWanderlusters to post pics from their travels two decades ago and so far only two of you have. Steve48 and suzycatpope.

I particularly liked Steve’s shot from his big adventure around the Soviet Union. It’s the one where he’s wearing dodgy-looking sunglasses and goes a long way explaining why he got into so many scrapes in the USSR.

And how about suzycatepope’s photos? How many young kids get to have a family holiday in Buenos Aires?

Suzy says she can’t remember much about that trip. But 20 years later she's driving around Iceland, sampling local beers and (allegedly) seeing the northern lights. It got me thinking – how much are we influenced by childhood journeys? Even if we can’t remember them?

My first big trip overseas – quite literally – was a family cruise around the Pacific on the MV Marco Polo. It was a lot longer than 20 years ago, but it has influenced me in two ways – I now refuse to wear clothes given to me by my mother that are made of polyester. And I always look behind slot machines, after making a killing sneaking into the gaming room each morning to collect the coins mis-directed by punters either too drunk or unsteady on their feet from the swell to get them into the slot.

But I digress. I just wanted to say thank you to Steve and Suzy for not leaving me out on a limb.

Actually suzycatepope has been quite busy on myWanderlust this week. She was one of the first to answer Wanderlust editor Phoebe Smith’s forum post about the Northern Lights. (Have you seen them? How was it for you?) And she posted a Just Back From with lots of tips and advice about driving along the south coast of Iceland. (Her most useful tip? Don’t run out of petrol!)

While you’re over at Just Back From, make sure you check out danielafrendo’s advice on spending the night in a Berber village in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and kenlangley’s tips on getting the most out of Utah.

It’s all about India this week on Experiences. Liam Kennedy beckons for us to follow him through the blue labyrinth of Jodhpur. And Jill24 shares a bus ride to Pushkar with a gaggle of chained prisoners. You can check them out here.

Over at Photography, it's another week, another set of photos from Iran from treacleminer, this time Mashad. Chandaala has been to a beach in Portugal and taken photos, making the sand look good – real good. It’s amazing what that guy can do with a camera. And HPerryP2 takes us to geothermal New Zealand via Venice

Anyway, that's it from me. That photo at the top has reminded me that I've got a pair of polyester slacks I have to send back to my mum...
