From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

Keeping grubby hands off T.E. Lawrence's head scarf

3 mins

Popped along to the Wanderlust-sponsored Petra event at the Royal Geographic Society last night. I had hoped to check out the artifacts laid out to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Petra being 'rediscovered' and maybe enjoying a canape or three, but I ended up being roped in to stand guard over T. E. Lawrence's sweat-stained head scarf, which people kept trying to put on. Sadly, it was our new magazine editor, Phoebe, who was the worst offender. Even reminding her that there was free wine on offer upstairs didn't work.

One of the real highlights of the evening, for me anyway, was meeting some myWanderlusters in the flesh. I pride myself at being able to spot a myWanderluster by their avatar, even if it isn't actually a photo of them. I had very limited success and had to rely on myWanderlusters introducing themselves. As they say, pride cometh before the fall.

Speaking of the kindness of strangers, have you been over to Experiences? We ran a mini-writing competition last week on that very theme and have been inundated with an abundance of funny, touching and affecting stories. Way too many great ones to single out – I'll leave that to the judges – but if you can't find something you like you're impossible to please. Check them out here.

Over at the Forum, Ray Ray is heading to Burma in October and wants advice from people who have been there recently. That's most myWanderlusters, so I'm expecting a good response. AngeP wants to know about day rooms at Bangkok airport and Dougie123 is keen to know how much a flight from Italy to the UK will set him back. Help them both here.

Oh, and Ocelus wants to know if you'll be staying at the new Hobbit hotel in Sweden.

myWanderlusters continue to return from all corners of the globe, bristling with top tips and advice. PennyH is fresh back from Gambia and recommends using Jankung Jadama as your guide if you're into birdwatching. ScottishMike tells you where to find the best food in Venice. And Rhoda1 has everything you need to know about Chamonix in France. Dannimoore's camping trip around Italy has thrown up all kinds of off-beat things to do and Howellsey has the scoop on the Llyn peninsula, even when the weather is bad.

Over at photography, maddietaylor87 has posted a set of stunning images from Morocco and mattcoppin a set of similarly stunning images from the US. Davids serves up some great pics of Western Canada and Jmancheta some shots from the secretive Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Which reminds me, I've got to get Lawrence's head scarf off Phoebe and back to the RGS before they notice it is gone. I hear it's difficult to edit a travel magazine banged up on the inside.
