From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

It's not easy being green. Or a judge for that matter

7 mins

It has fallen upon me to announce the winner of our recent mini photography and travel writing competitions. Please note that I say announce. I took no part in the judging process. Yet I have been sent out alone and unprotected to stick my head above the parapet and nail up the announcement, hoping all along that I don't get caught in the crossfire.

I have been told that the standard was extremely high and the decision to nominate winners a difficult one. To be honest I'd already noticed that as I flicked through the photography galleries and read the experiences posted. As usual, myWanderlust-ers, you have excelled yourselves.

I couldn't help but notice other gems hidden among the entries in experiences. The second part of Rhoda1's Barefoot in Burma Trilogy (at least I'm hoping it's a trilogy.) Glowing comments and a high star rating, despite the one star phantom lurking. BilboBaggins reluctantly embraces America's innate awesomeness. And mooseontheloose gets taken out by a snowball thrown by a monkey in Japan. Esnell also explains what travel means to her. And why Mexico soothes her soul.

Over in our photography galleries, the sea of green is punctuated by a lovely set of images of Mandalay from Peterj2002, a photo of monks taking photos by Dionneking and photos of dancing monks by Jamie Furlong. It seems monks are the new green.

Over on the forum, Liz Cleere is fuming at the news that Excess Baggage is getting the chop. Indeed, she's "absolutely flippin' fuming". So are we Liz. You'll be pleased to know that we're kick-starting a campaign to save Britain's premier, weekly, travel-themed radio programme, as we speak. More news soon.

In the meantime, can anyone help ElliFry with some advice on the mossies of Central America, Captain Planet on the state of the Colombo to Galle train in Sri Lanka and carodragon on arranging a trip to Floriade?

Meanwhile over at just back from, Liz Cleere has just returned back from Gujurat with a dirty big stamp in her passport allowing her to drink alcohol. Legally. She tells you how you can get one  too. Alan Taylor is back from Ethiopia with a little friend in tow, dreaming of the North Simien escarpment. At first I thought he'd done a Brangelina and adopted, but I think it's just some kind of stomach bug. Paul_M offers hints the best parts of Riga, brendaconybeare reveals the best place to get an uninterrupted view of the Alhambra in Granada. And Charles Kinsey is back from a scenic flight around Mount Cook and the surrounding glaciers. Take an extra battery for your camera, he says.

All in all, another exceptional week on myWanderlust. And in case you're still wondering, Scott Bennett won the photo competition with his shot of rice terraces in Bali. And JayR took out the travel writing competition for her piece about running through the jungles of South-East Asia with the Brunei Hash House Harriers.

I'm sure you'll agree that they're both worthy winners (he says, clambering back down the parapet and running for his life).

Speak to you next week.
