From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

In praise of pink elephants

5 mins

Jamie Furlong let me down this week. Those of you who have enjoyed his work in our photo galleries will know how unexpected that is. Jamie is the go to guy for great images. His galleries are always choc-a-bloc with standout images. But he missed an open goal this week. He posted a gallery of photos of elephants. And not one of them was pink.

You see, the theme of a mini-photo competition  we ran on myWanderlust this week was pink. There was the expected slew of cherry blossoms, sunsets and flamingos. Some unexpected pink nuns and pink dinosaurs, thrown in for good measure. But no pink elephants. Jamie, you've let me down.

OK, some of his elephants have a bit of pink in their tassles. The ears of one elephant are pink around the edges in that freckly way you see on some elephants. But they're not proper pink elephants. Like the ones on the label of a beer I tried in Belgium. What was it called again? That's right, Delerium Tremens. Triple brewed. 8.2% alcohol. Voted best beer in the world at the World Beer Championships in Chicago...

But I digress.

Just back from has every corner of the globe covered this week. Jill Frazier is back from Everest Base Camp and shares some terrific tips on beating altitude sickness and Kathmandu's burgeoning bar scene. Johnbrisland stepped on to the Antarctic mainland in a blizzard and warns of egomanical expedition leaders. And satkinson discovers the delights of the Outer Hebrides, dropping from the sky and landing on Barra Beach in a Twin Otter. April's the time to go, she says. No midges or tourists and you can just rock up and still find somewhere to stay.

Scorchie has just returned from sleeping in a hut perched high in a boabab tree in Senegal. The rubbish in Senegal is a bit off-putting, but watching the fisherman return with their daily catch in Kayar is a real highlight. Bilbo Baggins is back from Carmarthenshire and can't speak highly enough of the Red Kite feeding station in the Black Mountains. Grundog, on the other hand couldn't get enough of the Harry Potter-style charm of St Andrews.

Over at the forum, Scheungy is off on a dream trip to China and wants to know if anyone else is fulfilling a dream this year. Sergeant Pluck says he is weighing up which peak he wants to conquer this year to celebrate turning 40. Bilbo Baggins wants to drive around New Zealand but won't be doing it until next year. Are you fulfilling a dream this year? Tell us about it here.

Meanwhile, Bilbo Baggins is going to Lisbon in a few weeks and wants you to tell her the sights she must see. Scheungy wants some advice on Chinese visas (don't let bureaucracy destroy his dream). And Heather Roddy wants the dirt on weekends in Aberdeenshire. Help them all out here.

Experiences, and VikkiRed sets the bar high with a beautifully written piece about learning to make gelato in Puglia. Arantha recounts a hair-raising journey through the Laotian hospital system at the height of the swine flu epidemic, looking for reassurance that her partners rash isn't what it looks like it is. And Scorchie goes jogging in northern Senegal. Don't forget to check out Bilbo Baggins' encounter with a cassowary and Roseattack's provocative piece about why she loves airport.

Agree or disagree, just do it here.
