Saving the planet. Post by post.

5 mins

A survey published this week, in the journal Conservation Biology, has found that the majority of scientists involved in wildlife protection believe that it might be time to consider conservation triage – focusing resources on saving one endangered species over another.

Judging by the responses to Liz Cleere's post on the forum this week you can bet on one thing – the chosen species would have eye lashes.

Not that Liz’s post asked the question specifically. She’s heading off to see the One-Horned Asian Rhinos of Assam next week and wondered whether her visit would help or hinder the said endangered beast and whether she was invading their privacy. A lively debate ensued about wildlife preservation in general before ttbko took it off on an interesting tangent by talking about animals with eyelashes. You can follow the discussion here.

One answer would be to let the animals decide for themselves. These monkeys in Brazil made it pretty clear that they didn't want this drunk chap on their island.

Wizzyg is heading off on the Hurtigruten Ferry and wants some DIY excursion trips. Satkinson is taking her other half to Munich and wants some ideas. Help them both out here.

Mattyboy876 is just back from Madrid, Segovia and Toledo and throws the cat amongst the pigeons by admitting that he prefers Madrid to Barcelona. I’ve got to say, I’m with you on that one Matty. I find Barcelona a bit like its football side – a little bit too enamoured with itself. He recommends checking out the Piazza Santa Ana area for some great bars.

Gill-bob and Jill Frazier have been to Iceland. Not together, mind you. But they both loved it. Gill-bob visited the Eyjafjallajökull glacier and thanked the volcano for giving them an extra six days in India last year. Jill got to see the Northern Lights two nights running.

Liz Cleere popped up to Kalimpong and Darjeeling and recommends riding the steam train on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and dropping by the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre to watch the women spinning and weaving carpets. A simple ‘Namaste’ goes a long way, she says.

Gem24 spent 16 days in South Africa. Her highlight was seeing a pack of wild dogs at dawn. Carodragon went to Bavaria to do a photography course.

Over at experiences, Steve48 recounts a harebrained trip through the Soviet Union as a young man in the 70s. It’s a fantastic tale, with great pictures, that almost makes you wish the wall had never come down. Sararevell reports on her quest for hot chocolate and waffles in Brussels (you may remember her post on the forum a couple of weeks ago asking for advice).

Liz Cleere messes with fragile young minds at a Himalayan school in Sukhia Pokhri, skillfully evading a student’s question on whether she believed in the Big Bang Theory or not. Well? Do you Liz?

Elsewhere in experiences, Peterj2002 concludes his St Petersburg to Mongolia journey with perhaps his best post yet.

In photography, Jill Frazier taunts us with fantastic images of the Northern Lights she saw two nights running in Iceland.  Jamie Furlong has a stunning set of pictures from Darjeeling. And annahjerdin posted some pics of Dubai under fog. Funny, I don’t think of Dubai covered in mist. Just full of English footballers and z-list celebrities.

Finally, speaking of z-list celebrities, Mattyboy876 has a shot of two Smurfs being arrested in Spain.

Just out of interest, does anyone know if Smurfs have eye lashes?
