From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

A week after Fintown Trekker delivered his Sermon from the Bar and already one of his commandments has been broken

7 mins

It's nervous times here at the Towers. On Wednesday satkinson asked whether the cover of the latest issue of Wanderlust had been photoshopped. It has triggered a lively debate about the evils – or otherwise of photoshoppery and we've been expecting Fintown Trekker to stride in and overturn desks ever since. A commandment has been broken (number six) and His temple defiled.

Dan, the magazine editor, has taken a week's leave. Lyn is in hospital having her dodgy shoulder sorted out. Des, the designer has started working from home. They know that Fin is a vengeful myWanderluster...

That's something that Fin's local council are going to discover first hand. They have greenlighed a 25 turbine windfarm for his idyllic corner of Ireland and he is not happy. Bogs will be destroyed. Red-listed red grouse disturbed. And Glentie's Tidy Town status threatened. You can join the debate on the pros and cons of renewable energy here.

The Tower's very own Daisy Cropper asked 'What's the most frightening thing you've done on your travels?' Sergeant Pluck walked up a mountain covered in mines in Afghanistan. Liz Cleere sailed through pirate-infested waters. Howellsey quit his job to go travelling. You can add your death-defying act here.

While you're at it, why not pop over to denhamj's post about places you travelled to in ignorance and in retrospect probably shouldn't have. I always answer 'Brisbane' when I ask this question, but I don't think that's quite what denhamj had in mind.

As usual, myWanderlusters have flocked to the forum looking for advice and tips. Satkinson is looking for hidden gems in Paris. Julia Chaplin wants advice on Jordan. And hmoat 01 needs your help planning a city break to Istanbul. Lend a hand here.

Just back from is running hot and cold this week. On one hand you've got pebbles111 extolling the virtues of snowmobiling across Lapland in Finland, while billbain is waxing lyrical about staying in the homes of locals in the steaming hills of Sapa in Vietnam. DrG dips his oar into the icy waters of the River Yare in Norwich, while AlycewithaY eats cheese as she bounces through Cote d'Azur and Provence in a 2CV. Saabe5 got a bit of both camping in Spain. Sun and no rain at all in Spain. And a night camping in the snow at -8C on the way back at Poitiers. You'll find all their inside tips and information here.

There's a terrific collection of writing this week on experiences. Col44 takes us on a nostalgic ride on Europe's second oldest elevator in Istanbul's Pera Palace Hotel. Sararevell takes us on a bike ride along the coast in LA. And pebbles111 opens the throttle and hurtles us through Finnish Lapland on the back of a snowmobile.

For two exceptional pieces of writing though, you can't miss JayR's moving tale of her early days in London and cycleeast's sobering reflections on Homs. You will be moved by both. I guarantee it.

Can I just say how much I'm enjoying treacleminer's photographic trip down memory lane in the galleries at the moment? He has dusted off his old slides from the late 80s – not too well, I'm glad to say – and captured some of the 'old skool' spirit of travelling. OK, I'm a bit biased. The mid to late 80s was when I started travelling too. The world really was that colour.

I'm also loving AlycewithaY's pictures for almost the same kind of reasons. Alyce is new to myWanderlust and when I look at her photos I really get a sense of the wide-eyed excitement and thrill of travelling that consumed me when I first hit the road. Pervane's pics from Barcelona and Turkey have that same energy. Long may it last.

Burma continues to prove popular with stunning photos from both andrew heppleston and Rhoda1. Rhoda's Faces of Burma selection are well worth a look, if only for the cornstalk cigars.

Elsewhere, Scott Bennett has posted pictures of Niagara Falls in winter, satkinson has provided a selection of chilly images from Chamonix and Mik rugs up and posts snaps of a frozen Prague.

The last word, or should I say image, goes to Fintown Trekker. He has posted a gallery of the area under threat from the wind farm.

Help him and encourage him in this fight. If only to keep him kicking down our doors for breaking His commandments.
