From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

This week on myWanderlust it's all about weddings. And wintering in Tromso

8 mins

One of my best friends from school, Ken McNaughton, is in London this week to attend his step-daughter's wedding (they grow up so fast, don't they?). Normally I wouldn't mention this. Everyday countless Aussies wash up on these shores for numerous reasons, not all of them nefarious. But judging by myWanderlust this week, everyone has been going to weddings.

Ttbko gave up a weekend at the British Superbikes to go to a traditional Sikh wedding in Cardiff and discovered that the extra jewellery and spangly stones sewn by hand onto frocks reflect so much light that guests risk permanent damage to their sight.

Steve48 popped over to the Moldavian capital Iaşi for a traditional Romanian wedding. The bride and groom wore crowns, so that tells you the kind of circles Steve moves in. His advice? Dance. Dance as if your life depends on it. It'll help work up an appetite for the obligatory nine-hour wedding reception feast.

Speaking of dancing, we find the indomitable Liz Cleere talking Tina Charles with her taxi driver in Aden in Yemen in experiences. For those of you who weren't strutting your stuff in white flairs in the 70s, Tina had a hit in the bemoaning the fact that while she loved to love her baby (I'm guessing partner, rather than small child) she loved to dance. As usual, a great story from Liz. But I was disappointed that neither Liz or her taxi driver Selem mentioned that the track was produced by Biddu, the same guy who produced that other 70s classic, Kung Fu Fighting.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Indonesia is one of the most underrated destinations in the world. And again, Rhoda1 has proved my point. Not with photos, but with a fantastic account about the last leg of her Indonesian adventure.

Elsewhere in experiences, VikkiRed hits the Eternal City with Flat Eric and discovers that it exceeds her high expectations. Vkhaitan gives us the inside dirt on Kedarnath, and SianLovegrove makes a last minute dash to another world.

The forum is abuzz, welcoming John Terry, Chelsea and England captain, to the team. OK, it might not be that John Terry, but he has received the customary myWanderlust welcome.

Kavey points her fellow myWanderlusters to her mum's curry recipe, posted on the website to celebrate National Curry Week, and triggers a debate about what makes a good curry and where to find it. Beccs wonders if anyone has been put off travelling to Greece by media reports of unrest and discovers the answer is “not really.” Indeed the coverage had the opposite effect of popping the idea of going to Greece in my head...

Roovilla is assured that reports she has heard of racism in Turkey is greatly exaggerated. I'm with most myWanderlusters on this – I found Turkey, especially in the East, extremely friendly and hospitable.

Advice is needed on visiting Bilboa, Florence, Rome, Kolkata and photographic guides to cities. And Tromso. It seems every myWanderluster is heading up there this winter.

Themed galleries are all the go this week in photography. Jill Cochrane posted a set on street art. My favourite: The Banksy in San Fran.

“If at first you don't succeed, call an airstrike.”

Dr G goes green in Brunei. Contrary to Kermit's ministrations, the good Dr makes it look easy being green. Demonboy put up a set of four Limboo Ladies, striking portraits each and everyone of them. Indeed, demonboy went on a bit of a photo uploading frenzy putting up pics from Udaipur, Kechopari Lake and Kangchenjunga. India seems to be the destination of choice this week. Shoreham-Boy has posted a gallery from his trip there as well, including a truly stunning pic of the Taj Mahal.

If India's not your bag, check out Flydime's quality gallery of images from Vietnam, or join satkinson as she goes all Steve McClaren in Umshterdum.

While we're talking photos, don't forget to enter your best pics into our Travel Photo of the Year 2011 competition. Entries closes next Friday. There's a trip to Colombia to be won, so don't miss out.

Happy uploading!
