Announcing the myWanderlust Awards 2012. No sniggering please

3 mins

The call for nominations for the myWanderlust Awards on the forum this week has seen this normally august corner of the web descend into a hotbed of schoolboy (and schoolgirl) humour. Honestly, with some of the smutty innuendo flying around you'd think you'd stumbled upon the Member's Forum for Viz. Oops. I've said it. That's going to set Liz Cleere off all over again.

Seriously though, we are very excited about the myWanderlust Awards and the glittering ceremony across a few tables at the London Destinations Show. The idea is that we'll have a Skype link up with the myWanderlusters who are further afield and can't make it. I'll just have to dig out my dongle. OK Liz. You're on your last warning! You too, JayR!

Check out Simon's forum post on how to nominate your favourite member. Among other things...

Elsewhere on the forum, hmoat 01 asks, 'Are travel blogs a waste of cyber space?' and gets a seemingly resounding yes. Personally, I'm with Liz Cleere. They're not hurting anyone. And the internet is vast enough and ugly enough to cope with navel gazing – and attached photographic evidence – of every gap year, career break, city break, spiritual enlightenment, drunken stag night ever taken on the planet. And no-one is making you read it.

While you're on the forum, see if you can help out msm48 and Natalya24. Msm48 is heading to Oz in April/May and wants to know if you want to come with him. Natalya24 is thinking of finding herself and wants to know if you think it's all that it's cracked up to be.

In experiences, hmoat goes to Forks in Washington State and takes an impromptu Twilight Tour, even though she hasn't read the books, doesn't particularly like vampires or think Rob Patterson is dreamy.

Sararevell popped to Germany and learned how to make Schnapps. Really nice story, big on atmosphere. Just one complaint. It could have done with step-by-step instructions for us to follow at home. Maybe a follow up is called for Sara?

Dr G's schoolboy French finally comes in handy on a game drive in South Luangwa in Zambia (sadly, his French companions didn't get to try their schoolboy English). JayR's piece is titled 'A man, a bicycle, a temple...' It sounds like the start of a bad joke but it's actually a very moving piece about a man and his dream – Sewdass, one of the first Indians to move to Trinidad and Tobago.

Over at just back from, billbain has just returned from Java, raving about the Borobodur and Prambanan temples. He had to battle torrential rain and landslides to get to them, but it seems they were worth the effort. Kumarege had a similar battle with the elements on the Isle of Skye. Visiting Niest Lighthouse was the highlight, but he warns: be prepared for all types of weather.

Shoreham-Boy caught up with an old school friend in Munich and had a few jars at the Hofbrauhaus. Great for people watching – especially at peak time. Just steer clear of the Weisswurst. Hideo is just back from the Hofbrauhaus too and seemed to enjoy his visit just as much. He found himself in the company of Germans wearing lederhosen and hats with feathers. His advice: eat plenty of bratwurst and schnitzel before you've drunk too much. Annabel fi Balloch just spent a month in Thailand and found it an easy country to travel in. The only downside was that the broken pavements made it troublesome for wheeling luggage.

Finally, our commander-in-chief, Lyn Hughes, is back from a mini break to Connemara where she gamboled with otters, ate oysters and strolled along dazzling beaches. The weather threw the meteorological kitchen sink at her but she still came up smiling. Her advice? Travel out of season for fewer tourists and a much warmer welcome.

The photo gallery is awash with photos in response to our mini-competition themed 'Blue.' There are way too many great photos to highlight any in particular. Best you just make your way over to the galleries and have a look around yourself.

A word of warning. I'd avoid any photos posted by Liz on the subject. In her current mood, I dread to think how she might interpret the theme!
