From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

Warning: Navel gazing ahead as things go all existential at myWanderlust this week

Why?

It's a big question. Probably the first we ever ask. And it raised its head on myWanderlust this week when TheHappyWanderer asked, 'Why are we writing on this forum?'

Here at Wanderlust Towers we know why we want you to write on the forum. We want to create a place where like-minded individuals can talk about the thing they love most – travel. Share tales, swap tips and have a bit of a laugh.

And it seems from the responses to HappyWanderer's post, that's what you guys like about it too. It's not perfect. There are things we can do to tweak and improve. But it's nice to know we're on the right path.

While we're on the topic of life's big questions, editor-in-chief Lyn Hughes asks, 'Where are you travelling in September?' It's a question that gets asked on the forum each month – not always about September, obviously – and it's one that I dread reading. myWanderlusters are such well-travelled folk there's always at least half a dozen destinations I wish I was going to as well.

It's the same this month. In no particular order myWanderlusters are going to Burma, Ghent, Ladakh, Kabul, Grizedale Forest and a yet-to-be-announced surprise destination arranged by a kindly fiancé as a birthday present.

Usually I'd be consumed by jealousy, cursing the fact that another month was going to pass with me chained to my computer. But – woo-hoo! – I'm off to Nairobi next week to take part in the StoryMoja Hay festival. I can't tell you how excited I am. Pop over to the forum and tell us where you're wandering. I can handle it this month. Really, I can.

RachelEHBlythe is off to Mozambique and wants to know how feasible it is just to land in Maputo and travel without hiring a vehicle. Having done something similar many moons ago, I say that not only is it feasible, it's preferable. Riding in the back of a pickup truck to Bamboozi's Campsite, just as the sun was setting, was one of the highlights of my visit to the country. But that's just me. What's your advice for Rachel?

Elsewhere Captain Cartography (great name, by the way) is on the way to central Vietnam to do some trekking and wants to know about staying in smaller villages. You can give the Cap a heads-up here.

Over to just back from and ByronLewis returned from Morocco with two pieces of advice: climb Toubkal (so good he did it twice). And stop at stop signs. He gave way rather than stop and got fined £70. Ouch!

Louiseheal advises that south Devon is not a place for a lactose-intolerant vegetarian. Those of you with a penchant for fish and chips, cream tea and a spot of Art Deco architecture are in for a treat.

Rhoda1 just got back from western Canada, a little lighter in the pocket – the Canadian dollar is on steroids at the moment – but with great tips on where to spot bears fishing and how to see the Rockies in the sunshine. Oh, and take a headnet she says. The mossies are as big as helicopters and fly in squadrons.

RachelR just got back from San Francisco and advises to look out for the Painted Ladies. I'm wondering just what part of the city she visited!

Over in the photography galleries this week we've been treated top not just one, but two, brilliant images. I love flydime's shot at La Tomatina, capturing that elusive moment when the tomato goes splat! And Rhoda1's shots of bear cubs fishing are terrific. Pop over and check them out.

Cornish evangelist LaurenAmelia is back, putting up more photos from England's south west. I'm beginning to suspect that Lauren is in the pay of the Cornish Tourist Board. It always looks so sunny and relaxing in her pictures.

Which poses perhaps the biggest question of all today: why does it always rain when I go there?
