From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. Already?

5 mins

Back where I'm from you always knew Christmas was coming when stone fruit like peaches and apricots started appearing at the grocers. Fruit and veg is still seasonal in Australia, you see. So when you saw a story on the news about the first box of cherries of the season being auctioned for charity you knew Christmas was just around the corner.

It started getting hot, too. Come Christmas Day it'd sometimes push 35 degrees. That didn't stop mum from cooking a traditional Christmas roast, though. We'd slog our way through a roast turkey, our paper crowns, pulled from crackers, sticking to our sweaty foreheads. Trust me, unlike the American flag, those colours do run.

Yet here I am, 10,000 miles away, chipping the ice off the windscreen of the car. I guess that's why Lyn's forum post about whether she should ask Santa for a Kindle this Christmas came as a bit of a shock. Christmas? What was she talking about?

The chilling realisation that the festive season is indeed upon us set in in when Liz Cleere enquired about people's travel plans for December, and in particular, what they were doing for Christmas. Just the usual myWanderlust thing it seems. LaurenAmelia is off to Romania. Satkison is heading to Austin, Texas. And DrG is heading off for an extended jaunt through southern Africa. The prize for the most festive plan goes to Julie69. She's go to Tromsø for a bit of dog sledding. Say hello to Santa for us, will you?

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas elsewhere on myWanderlust. Satkinson's photo gallery from a recent trip to Munich included a couple of Christmas-themed images, including the one of a gnarly-looking gnome that adorns this post. It also features a chap surfing. On a river, it has to be said, but much more in keeping with my Christmas ideal.

Northframe has posted some stunning pics of the Aurora Borealis, snapped on a recent visit to Muonio. Pliers shared some suitably snowy shots from the top of Gokyo Ri. And Greenerr posted some misty pictures from Grindlewald. All guaranteed to have you reaching for the mulled wine and mince pies.

Things warm up a bit in just back from though. Liz Cleere has been to Delhi and defies anyone to visit the Gandhi memorial and not be moved to tears. She also warns that Delhi is not like the rest of India. Satkinson regales us with tips and advice for Munich. My favourite insight? Motorhead fans are much nicer than they're given credit for.

Over at experiences, Lainecloud visits Athens and finds it quirky and challenging, but ultimately rewarding. Both ttbko and GlenRooney sing the praises of travelling by two wheels. Ttbko recounts a motorcycle adventure to Assen in northern Holland to watch a bike race. GlenRooney a pedal-powered odyssey through Romania.

“A wrong turn in rural Romania can never be truly described as a 'wrong' turn,” he says. You'll always be inundated by people wanting to help or have a chat. Unfortunately, the same can't be said of taking a wrong turn in Rotterdam. Just ask ttbko.

Liz Cleere continues in her role as unofficial ambassador for the Indian Tourist Board with another fascinating account of its hidden corners. This time, the tiny state of Sikkim. I always find myself checking the price of flights to India after reading Liz's pieces...

Hmoat 01 visited Prora, the monstrous Nazi holiday camp built on Rϋgen. It's a sobering, melancholic account that perfectly captures the dilemma of visiting this odd remnant of a time most Germans would like to forget.

But hey, it's Christmas. Let's celebrate all that is good in the world.

Me? I'm off to buy a pound of cherries.
