From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

One lump or two?

5 mins

This week on myWanderlust Howellsey asked the big questions: 'Tea or coffee?' and 'Where in the world did you enjoy the best cuppa of either?'

The best cup of tea I've every had was in Somalia. I'd just walked 30 ks from the Kenyan border and after being welcomed by a man who may or may not have been an immigration official in this particular lawless corner of the country, tea was called for. A small boy in tattered shorts scampered off down a dusty road and returned a few minutes later with two cups of chai. It was the first time I'd had chai and the unexpected hit of herbs and spices took me aback. My murmur of delight was noted and each morning there was a cup of chai waiting for my at the door of my room when I woke up.

I seem to remember initially being enamoured with the tea served in tulip shaped glasses in Turkey too. But that soon passed when it was foisted on me in every home, cafe, carpet shop or bus ride across the country.

Back to Howellsey's post, it seems coffee is the hot beverage of myWanderlusters on the road. Cast your vote here and tell us where and when a cup of coffee or tea changed your life.

Liz Cleere's post on holidaying in the UK sparked a debate on what actually constitutes part of the UK. It was prompted by our news story on Jersey, which is of course not part of the UK but rather a Crown Dependency. Liz took it on the chin, changed the scope of her initial question to cover the British Isles rather than just the UK and everyone seems happy. Having said that, Scotland, which is part of the UK, seems to be the most popular choice. What's yours?

As usual, advice was sought this week on myWanderlust and SebHolm91 wanted information on doing Japan on the cheap and was swamped with any number of great tips with, it has to be said, indecent haste. Our glorious leader, Lyn, is off to Madeira and looking for tips. Most myWanderlusters recommended their favourite walks on this yompers paradise. DrG suggested Henriques & Henriques Special 1971. What do you think?

Sonal08 is just back from Varanasi and says it is a street photographer's paradise. Mattyboy876 is back from Chernobyl and suggests avoiding eye contact with locals, especially if they've got three. He didn't say that. He said to avoid contact with locals with bottles of Vodka on their table. It inevitably leads to long nights, hazy memories and waking up in hallways.

Over at experiences, Roseattack went to Gleneagles to play with some eagles. No, really. She did. And she's got the photos to prove it. David Ross takes us on a trip back in time, dusting off his early 80s Kevin Keagan perm and skinny jeans to take us on an Inter-rail adventure around Europe. He enjoyed his first one and in 1981 it became an annual event. Another great read from David.

Jamie Furlong is back in the photo gallery this week with a couple of sets from Thrissur. They are up to his usual standard and I'm now busily scanning air fare websites for a good deal to India.

Sonal08, on the other hand, turns her lens on London. I'm still trying to figure out how she took a self portrait in an Underground station without another single soul in it but herself.
