From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

Did you miss me?

8 mins

Back in the day, when I was a lowly junior copywriter for an advertising agency back in Oz, my Creative Director would constantly tell me not to use questions in my copy.

‘You can’t control the answer,’ he’d say. ‘And you might not like what it is.’

As you can see, I didn’t listen much to what he said. Perhaps that why the lingerie campaign featuring a young Elle McPherson was given to the other junior copywriter and I had to try and convince graduates that they could find a rewarding and satisfying career as a manager at their local KFC...

But I digress. The point I wanted to make was that you may have noticed that I wasn’t here this time last week. I was off being trained in the fine art of writing for the web. And, as you can probably tell from my only vaguely relevant story, I didn’t really learn much.  I should have thrown at least half a dozen key words at you by this stage and crafted a SEO-friendly opening paragraph. My only hope is that by using the words ‘lingerie’ and ‘Elle McPherson” – twice now – we’ll rank a bit higher in some of the more interesting search enquiries.

But I digress. Again.

What I really wanted to do today was alert you to some of the fantastic stuff posted by myWanderlusters over the last week. Or so. Like LS13’s intense story about attending a voodoo ceremony in Benin over at Experiences. Or DrG’s vivid account of the myriad wonders of the rainforests of Brunei. Or my personal favourite – Steve48’s account of touring Transylvania with a troupe of twenty-somethings.

And that’s not to mention Scorchie's tale of riding a bicycle through Middle Earth. And ocelus encountering the Tour de France in Paris. And annahjerdin’s tale of a camel beauty contest in the UAE. I think you get my drift. You need to get over to Experiences and start reading.

The photo galleries are of an equally high standard. Red pepper’s pics from Uzbekistan are superb. And Tom Greenough has posted some of the best shots of the Northern Lights I have seen for a while in his set from a winter in Iceland. ColinO delights with a whole lot of photos from Seville. Val Yellow has posted a single, spectacular shot from Milford Sound. And Angela R’s pics from Red Canyon in Utah are a treat. And that’s just a tip of the photographic iceberg. Again, you know what to do. Get over to the photo galleries pronto and have a good look around.

If it’s advice you’re after – either to give or receive – then you need to get over to the Forum. Kavey wants advice on accommodation in Kyoto. DrG is off to Brest via Calais and is keen to know the must-sees. And chocolatelyclaire wants help with her travelling cookbook. BillandChris are off to Argentina; Chris Gray is off to Singapore; and Barbara Hudson is off to the Scottish Isles to do a bit of bird watching and they all want the help of the myWanderlust collective mind. Help them here.

Oh, and good news, Fintown Trekker is back! He’s complaining things are a bit quiet but if the Trekker’s back, you can be rest assured that it won’t stay that way for long.

Of course, for a motherlode of up-to-the-minute, 24-carat advice you need to pop over to Just Back From From Sierra Leone to the Lofoten Islands in Norway, from New Zealand to Gubbio in Italy, we’ve got myWanderlusters fresh off the plane and brimming with tips to save you money and make the most of your precious travelling time (we’ve got Tanzania, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania covered as well).

On that note, I shall sign off, happy in the knowledge that somewhere in the States a sweaty palmed teen who had Googled ‘Elle McPherson’s lingerie’ has been directed here and his horizons immediately widened. If only to type ‘Elle McPherson in lingerie on a beach in Sierra Leone.’

Until next week…
