From the Editor: The best from myWanderlust this week

And so the worm turns. And turns. And turns...

I want to start out this week by addressing the elephant in the room. The elephant in the smallest room in the house. The elephant in the smallest room in the house that really isn't an elephant.

If you've read Sergeant Pluck's piece in experiences about travellers without tickets you'll know what I'm talking about. After a week or so of discomfort he made a startling discovery. The sort of discovery that world travellers make a least once in their life. And in Pluck's inimitable style he recounts his sorry tale with humour and no-nonsense advice. Best of all, the cure can be bought over the counter, saving you the embarrassing visit to your local GP.

Embarrassment was a common theme on myWanderlust this week. Hmoat devoted a forum post and an experience to her most mortifying travel moment. It happened over breakfast in Switzerland. Rather than embarrass her all over again, I'll let her tell you all about it herself here. Then, if you want to make her feel better, why not share your most embarrassing moment here.

Another source of embarrassment is explored on Sangreya's post about the strange things she packs when she goes travelling. And cycleeast delves into a minefield of sartorially appropriate travel. Cycleeast's post reminded me of batik ensemble I picked up in Bali when I was younger. It was both culturally and sartorially offensive, which of course I didn't realise at the time. I'm blushing thinking about it now. Have your say – and admit to any fashion mistakes you may have made – here.

Cries for help this week come from Lainecloud, who is looking for advice on getting from Amman to Jerusalem, nigsims, who is looking for a picture of a dog on a stack of cans and Sangreya, who wants to ship home something unusual. Help them. Please.

Just back from and this week we've got every corner of the globe covered. ChrisP has returned from Argentina buzzing about the waterfalls and glaciers and everything inbetween. Shoreham Boy fondly recalls a dark beer in Hell Hunt in a chilly Tallinn and Pliers teases us with tales from Trinidad and Tobago (how is Chaka Demus, BTW?). Salb also gives us the inside scoop on Cape Verde and Gin's advice on Weligama in the very south of Sri Lanka proves to be just the tonic.

Experiences is chock full of great stories and useful advice. I've already mentioned Pluck's indispensable guide to disposing of travellers without tickets and hmoat's mortifying tale of breakfast blunders in the heart of Switzerland. But make sure you check out Rhoda1's poetic tale Barefoot in Burma Part 1 and Angela R's piece on the wolves of Yellowstone Park. If you're heading to Burma any time soon – and who isn't? – you need to read Peterj2002's advice on changing money there. It's worth its weight in kyat.

Like birds and beaches? Then you'll love Pliers gallery from Trinidad and Tobago. Frozen landscapes more your bag? Try Chris Gray's pictures from Lapland (Shoreham Boy's snaps from Tallinn are worth a peek too). For a blast from the past, check out treaclleminer's slides from Burma, back when you could travel the country for the cost of a bottle of Johnny Walker and a carton of 555 cigarettes.

Finally, Chandaala's evocative postcards from Diani Beach in Kenya had me reminiscing about a trip I made up the Kenyan coast in an old dhow many moons ago.

How many moons ago? I'm ashamed to say.
