Meet our speakers

William Gray

With 30 years experience as a travel journalist, and awards ranging from BGTW Travel Photographer of the Year to AITO Travel Writer of the Year, Will’s words and pictures have appeared in numerous publications, including his own wildlife and family travel guidebooks.

As well as taking stock photos for AWL Images, he offers photography workshops and one-to-one tuition and is a contributing editor for Wanderlust

Lyn Hughes

Lyn co-founded Wanderlust magazine in 1993. She and her late husband launched their dream publication on their return to the UK, despite being warned by industry “experts” that no one would buy a magazine about travel.

With the business now celebrating  26 years, Wanderlust is still one of the world’s top travel magazines. Lyn is still very much hands-on as editor-in-chief and has won numerous awards as an editor and for her articles.

In 2008, The Times lauded Lyn as one of the “50 Most Influential People in Travel.” In 2012, Lyn was presented by an Outstanding Contribution Award in the British Travel Press Awards. In 2014, Lyn was awarded one of the 'Top 60 Most Influential Women in Travel in the Last 60 Years' by the Association of Women Travel Executives.

Jonathan Lorie

Jonathan Lorie is the author of The Travel Writer's Way (Bradt 2019), the ultimate handbook for aspiring travel writers at all levels 

He has been a travel magazine editor, freelance travel writer for national magazines and newspapers and director of Travellers’ Tales, the UK’s leading training agency for travel writers, which offer expertise from leading industry experts on how to get into travel writing and photography.

Jonathan has taught writing courses in Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Morocco.

He teaches and blogs at the official Travellers Tales website.

Emma Thomson

Currently BGTW Travel Writer of the Year, Emma Thomson is a respected travel journalist for the UK national press, who spends roughly three-quarters of the year away on assignment covering adventurous off-the-beaten-track destinations.

Commissions have ranged from a world-first expedition crossing Namibia’s Skeleton Coast unsupported, to travelling the length of the Silk Road from Xi’an to Istanbul.

A passionate advocate of responsible tourism, she frequently visits countries recovering from natural disaster or political upheaval, penning features that help travellers regain their trust in these destinations.

She’s also contributes to podcasts, radio and TV.

Elizabeth Atkin

Elizabeth joinedWanderlustin February 2019, to oversee the award-winning content on Wanderlust.co.uk, Wanderlust's social media and its popular newsletters. 

Since 2013, she's worked as digital editor for other national magazines, and as a specialist journalist covering travel, lifestyle, health, parenting, and product reviews. 

Elizabeth's travels have taken her to Iceland, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Sweden, the Finnish Lakeland, the USA and the United Arab Emirates – although nowhere can compare to the Netherlands. Her next trip will be a cross-country adventure in Morocco.

Kevin Merrey

Kevin Merrey is a filmmaker, photographer and adventurer. He has produced content for some of the biggest names in the outdoor and adventure scene and has filmed in some of the wildest places in the UK and across Europe.

Kev got into filming whilst on his own adventures, using GoPros to record mountain climbing, kayaking and trekking trips. Before long his short films were getting noticed online. One thing led to another and he found himself starting up SkyRise Productions in 2016.

Kev now works and collaborates with various camera operators, drone pilots, photographers and producers and is now working on some very exciting projects that will take him to all four corners of the globe.

Introduction to Travel Writing, Saturday 18 January, 9.30am to 11.30am 

Whether you are interested in writing for a career or simply for pleasure, and whether you’d love to be an author or a blogger, this seminar will inspire and inform on how to take your writing to the next level.

A team of experienced editors and writers including Lyn Hughes of Wanderlust and Jon Lorie of Travellers’ Tales will guide you through the different styles of writing, giving practical tips and tricks. Suitable for any level of experience.

Filming your Travel Adventures, Saturday 18 January, 12.30pm to 2.30pm

Advances in technology means that making a film of your travels is easier than ever. But how do you make something to a professional standard – and can you even make money from it? 

Filmmaker Kevin Merrey will cover preparation and planning, tech/film gear, location planning, drone filming, and post-production in this intensive seminar, as well as showing some inspiring examples of his work. 

For those wanting to go a step further to try to make income from it, this session will also cover working with brands and preparing a pitch.

Improving your Travel Photography, Saturday 18 January, 3.30pm to 5.30pm

Before, during and after your trip, find out how to take your travel photography to the next level, whether you’re a beginner or enthusiast. 

Professional photojournalist William Gray will give expert advice on everything from choosing the right gear to telling a story with pictures. Suitable for all levels from beginner upwards. 

Getting Your Work Published, Sunday 19 January, 10am to 12pm

Do you dream of writing a book, getting published in a magazine, or making a career from writing for websites?

Lyn Hughes and Elizabeth Atkin of Wanderlust, freelance writer Emma Thomson and photojournalist Will Gray will take you through the various outlets and opportunities, the skills involved, and how to make it.
