1: Sydney

You may be dreaming of a sun-soaked harbourfront and Australia’s iconic Opera House. But get it wrong and you may find yourself in a T-shirt, stood on the banks of its Canadian counterpart in icy Nova Scotia.

2: Birmingham
Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham, UK (Dreamstime)
The UK's second city isn't typically a travel hotspot, but its airport has good links that stretch across the globe. Handy, unless you accidently book a flight out of Birmingham, Alabama, in America’s Deep South, that is. It has been done.

3: San José
National Theatre, San José, Costa Rica (Dreamstime)
Costa Rica's capital is a gateway to the country's volcanoes, rainforests and rich wildlife. But make sure you you’re your booking with a fine eye before confirming, as you could just as easily end up in Silicon Valley’s Californian hub San Jose, USA, or even San José del Cabo in Mexico.

4: Granada
Dancers in Granada, Spain (Dreamstime)
With castles and palaces dotting the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is a fine example of medieval grandeur. But one vowel slip later and you could be lapping up the flour-white sands and verdant jungles of Grenada in the Caribbean. Although to us this seems like a win-win, surely?

5: Dakar/Dhaka
Fishermen in Dakar, Senegal (Dreamstime)
It’s probably not one to worry about too much if you’re booking via the web, but if you’re on the phone it might be wise to clarify with the agent which city you mean. Otherwise, you could be left guessing as to whether you’ll end up in Senegal’s vibrant capital (Dakar) or the bustling Bangladeshi hub (Dhaka).
