Win! A trip to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan worth over £3,000

Closing date: 17 Apr 2019

The mystique of the Silk Road feels alive in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan – two countries whose names conjure images of rolling mountains, nomadic herders and open plains. It’s a part of the world the experts at Dragoman can help you unravel, with a chance to win two seats on their 16-day Mountain Kingdoms of Kyrgyzstan tour.

A land of discovery

You’ll begin in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan’s capital, where Soviet-era architecture stands in the shadows of the Tien Shan mountains. After exploring the Osh Bazaar market, full of spices the colour of autumn leaves, continue on to Ala Archa National Park where wild camping, hiking and horse riding await.

The next week is spent touring Kyrgyzstan’s landscapes – gorges dotted with juniper bushes; glacial lakes as smooth as mirrors. Nights can be spent in family-run guesthouses and traditional yurts, alongside the shepherds who call the hills their home. You can visit the red sandstone cliffs of the Jeti Oguz Valley, and the petroglyphs of Cholpon Ata. You’ll reach the remote village of Kochkor, where an eagle hunter – one of Kyrgyzstan’s oldest traditions – will demonstrate their skills.

From there, you’ll embark on the road trip through the Fergana Valley into Uzbekistan. Dominated by rolling hills, the region’s home to the 19th-century Palace of Khudayar Khan, covered in colourful mosaics. This is also where you can discover the silk weaving history that helped give the Silk Road its name. Finally, in Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, an Imperial Russian-style cabaret will finish your trip with a musical bang.
