WIN! A trip to Texas with Wanderlust's Travel Photo of the Year 2019

Closing date: 15 Nov 2019

One of our favourite Wanderlust diary dates has finally arrived for 2019: Travel Photo of the Year – the UK’s largest amateur travel photo competition.

Last year, we saw winners in the form of monkeys playing ‘rock, paper, scissors’ in Botswana, boats bobbing on a mysterious red lake in Senegal, holy scenes in Jerusalem, and a pink car splashing through the streets of Cuba.

Now we are once again asking you to gather together your iconic images and soul-stirring travel shots and send them in for our judges to scour. This year’s competition will see four amateur photographers win an unforgettable trip to the very heart of Texas.

Wanderlust has teamed up with Travel Texas – together with the cities of Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Dallas – to send our four winning photographers on a true once-in-a-lifetime trip: to experience the real heart of beautiful Texas.

Big. Bold. Bodacious. These words barely scratch the surface of Texas’ enormous cultural legacy, but they certainly set the Lone Star State apart from the nation’s 49 others. Add a mix of cosmopolitan swagger, the impressive natural beauty and a dynamic population of proud residents, and you get a sense of what makes Texas distinctive.

This is where you could be going…

Austin proudly stands apart from the rest of Texas. This dynamic and forward-thinking city is its own cultural, political and demographic scene.

As the ‘Live Music Capital of the World®’, Austin values its impressively creative populace and prides itself on a hip lifestyle that prioritises artistic experiences like concerts, homespun businesses and creative cuisine.

It’s a destination city for entrepreneurs and creatives alike. Grab a festival badge, queue up for world-famous barbecue and glide into Austin’s laid-back vibe.

Houston is a vibrant, sprawling, modern metropolis, with a reputation that’s growing exponentially. Dubbed the ‘new capital of Southern cool’ by GQ magazine, the USA’s fourth-largest city is a Texan icon: especially if you’re looking for world-class arts, award-winning cuisine, pro sports and hidden gems.

Add a splash of Lone Star classics, including the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and the world-famous NASA Mission Control, and you’ll quickly see that there’s a reason to believe all the Houston hype.

People are often surprised to learn that San Antonio’s origins predate the United States’ founding by over half a century.

The Alamo, established in 1718, is a cultural icon, and together with the four other Spanish missions, make up Texas’ only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Add a burgeoning culinary scene, a dash of cowboy culture and a welcome lack of pretension, and it’s no surprise San Antonio is one of America’s most popular destinations. It’s also the gateway to the Texas Hill Country – a place of rolling hills, silver rivers and wildflowers that stretch for miles.

Fort Worth is a forward-looking city with a fascinating history: one tied to Texas’ legendary cattle drives, with its Stockyards National Historic District still hosts some good ol’ fashioned cowboy business, including livestock auctions, honky-tonk saloons and rodeos.

At the same time, the modern art scene is flourishing, with galleries – The Kimbell, The Modern and The Amon Carter Museum of American Art – featuring world-class works. Add a growing distillery and craft beer scene and you have a city you’ll want to stay in for weeks.

Big things happen in Dallas. This vibrant city is a place of festivals and fairs, art and culture, food and fun.

Only in Dallas can you eat a corndog watching American football in the shadows of the nation’s tallest cowboy statue, or sip tequila and lime on the iconic Margarita Mile – the place the frozen margarita machine was first created.

You can also explore one of the pivotal events in American history – the 1963 assassination of JFK – at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, or visit the city’s many exciting art galleries and museums.
