Culture & wildlife

What better place to start than with the Taj Mahal – India’s great marble paean to love. Seeing its walls turn from pink to ivory-white at sunrise merits a place in anyone’s top seven sights. Other big hitters include Jordan’s labyrinthine rose-red city of Petra, or perhaps the Great Wall of China, stretching thousands of kilometres. But there are also less famous options to consider: Bhutan’s rockclinging Paro Taktsang Monastery temple, perhaps, or the step pyramids of Mexico’s remarkable Maya city of Chichen Itza?

But you can celebrate natural wonders as well, and there’s certainly no shortage of those. Spying the Great Migration in Kenya or canoeing the dense jungles of the Amazon are just as worthy of inclusion as any ancient ruin. What could be more iconic than encountering a Bengal tiger in India or looking for sloths in the cloud forests of Costa Rica – a setting to raise goosebumps on the necks of any travellers? Then there’s the Galápagos Islands. Surely the archipelago that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution deserves ‘wonder’ status?

Walking & cycling

Sometimes greatness lies in the challenge. What about Mount Everest, and trekking to its Himalaya base camp? Or you could combine natural splendour with ancient history and follow in the footsteps of centuries past on the classic Inca Trail, walking through the Andes to remote Machu Picchu – a journey enhanced by the dancing, food and colourful costumes of Cuzco’s indigenous Inti Raymi winter solstice festival.

Angkor Wat (Paul Goldstein)

Closer to home, there’s the network of paths linking the Alpine valleys around Mont Blanc or the views, food and history you’ll encounter hiking along Italy’s Amalfi Coast. And those who prefer two wheels over two legs will likely be drawn to a different range of destinations. Cambodia’s huge 12th-century Angkor Wat temple complex is even more mind-blowing when explored by bicycle. Meanwhile, riding past the crystal-clear waters and pebble bays of the Dalmatian coastline to the UNESCO city of Dubrovnik is one of Europe’s greatest wonders.

Whatever you choose, whether cycling an ancient ruin under a dappled afternoon sky, hiking a natural wonder or lying in wait for a wild encounter in the African plains, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Don’t be left wondering…
