Win! A trip for two to Morocco worth over £1,500

Closing date: 30 Nov 2018

The Sahara Desert, a land of sweeping dunes, Berber camps and camel trains - made iconic as the setting for David Lean’s film Lawrence of Arabia. For many, the classic adventure. Tour operator KE Adventure Travel is offering you the chance to explore this magical sandy land on foot with its Edge of the Sahara Trek in Morocco.

Desert trekking

Start with a brief stop among the souks and squares of Marrakech before driving over the High Atlas Mountains to wilder climes. There you will dip into the Draa Valley, a 100km swathe that contains the longest palm grove in the country. Stop in Ouled Driss, an outpost on the edge of the Sahara and sleep in a Berber camp before forging dunes and abandoned villages.

Next, spend time in Sidi Naji, a holy shrine for nomads, then head deeper into the desert. Here, the dunes increase in splendour, with the distant Erg Ez-Zahar and the converging wadis of Mala Ouedane truly catching the eye.

But the desert isn’t just plains. Tamarisk and acacia trees defy logic on the dry banks of the Draa River, their foliage puncturing the ochre landscape. The dunes of Tilhatine lie beyond, as well as a wadi that’s been dry for 35 years, since the construction of the El Mansour Eddahbi Dam. After one final night in a Berber camp, you’ll return to Marrakech to explore its medina and Djemaa el-Fna square, overlooked by Koutoubia Mosque.
