Want to know what’s involved in being a professional writer or photographer? Join Wanderlust’s Lyn Hughes* and professional photographer Paul Harris in researching, writing and photographing a major article and other material for Wanderlust.
Our mission on this trip will be to produce a guide to the best of Cappadocia for Wanderlust readers. We will be collaborating on at least one major article for the magazine. Other content and photographs will be showcased on the Wanderlust website, and potentially in our other titles (Unique Honeymoons and Take Better Travel Photos).
For both writers and photographers this trip will be a unique opportunity to understand the disciplines of producing work for publication, and what it is that editors look for.
Lyn Hughes is co-founder & editor-in-chief of Wanderlust. She is an award-winning writer who can share her wealth of experience in writing, editing, travelling & judging writing & photography competitions.
Paul Harris – Paul is an award-winning photographer. As well as being a regular contributor to Wanderlust he is on the judging panel of the Wanderlust Travel Photo of the Year Competition – the UK’s largest travel photography competition.
Level: Most suitable for intermediate to advanced photographers and writers.
This trip is designed for people who are already at a good level with their photography or writing. If you’ve entered writing or photography competitions, been on similar courses, or tried to get published, it’s for you. Even if this is your first stab at ‘proper’ travel reporting, you’ll find it rewarding – as long as you bring bags of enthusiasm and energy.
However, you may wish to consider one of our structured workshops before coming on this more advanced trip.
Photographers, note that the Photography Workshop in Istanbul preceeds this tour so can be combined if you want to brush up your skills before going On Assignment. We would highly recommend doing this if you are not completely familiar with your camera, usually keep your camera on automatic, or would value being critiqued.
Remember, although we’ll have lots of fun, this is NOT a holiday – it’s an assignment!
Note: You need to select whether you are going to be a writer OR photographer. However, if you are interested in the other skill, we will endeavour to help you develop there too.
Note: Photographers will be expected to have a DSLR camera in order to obtain photos of a high enough quality for the magazine.
Cappadocia – 5 days land only / 6 days Ex-London
Pre-departure: You will receive some guidance on the type of article we will be collaborating on and some pointers on advance research. Because of the limited time that we have in Turkey the more background preparation you have done the better.
Note that the itinerary is very flexible. Although we will build in debrief and feedback sessions, experience of previous assignments shows that you may be busy following a story and so choose to miss these.
Day 1 Thurs Arrive in Kayseri early morning after an overnight flight and transfer to Goreme. Meet the Wanderlust team who will be guiding your through your assignment. We are on assignment straight away so, after your first briefing, you will be getting down to work.
We will then head out, either as a group, or in smaller groups, to familiarise ourselves with Goreme and carry out some initial fact-finding. In the evening we will have a welcome drink and then head out to dinner together.
Day 2 Fri After breakfast, you will have a briefing, before splitting up into small groups (or individually) to research and gather material. We may be visiting historical sights or checking out the best places to stay or we may be interviewing (and photographing) locals to get their insider secrets.
Early evening we’ll meet up again with our mentors and review the day’s€tivities and research, before heading out to dinner. Due to the nature of the assignment we will probably split up so that we can sample several different restaurants.
Day 3 Sat After breakfast we will have our morning debrief with our tutors, discussing aims and objectives for the day before heading back out on assignment.
Returning to our hotel late afternoon, if time permits, we can have a session on ‘how to get your work published’ and an opportunity to get your work critiqued, before heading out to dinner. This evening we will probably split up again so that we can sample several different restaurants
Day 4 Sun After breakfast the morning is free for that last bit of research that we need to complete the assignment, before an afternoon session where we will pull together our work for the Wanderlust article. In the evening we have a last chance for dinner together and a look back over the weekend.
Day 5 Mon Early morning, (approx 4am) transfer from Goreme to Kayseri airport to catch the 08:00 flight back home.
We have designed these tours to give you the option of taking up an all-inclusive package which includes your air seats, or the option of making your own way there and then meeting up with the rest of your group at the first hotel or Kayseri airport.
What’s not included: Single room supplement, flights, travel insurance, visas, all meals with the exception of breakfast, gratuities and any items of a personal nature.
Single supplement: £75
