The enchanting New Forest landscapes and the animals that roam freely through it are our subjects on this three day workshop led by artist Trevor Waugh.
Each day we embark in search of captivating locations such as the bluebell forests and the Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary to paint the surrounding landscapes and animals found here. Along the banks of clear rivers and under shady groves we enjoy workshops en plein air.
As the days begin to get longer and warmer in spring, the forest comes back to life, green buds reclaim tree branches, yellow gorse brightens the heath and the young fists of fern being to unravel. The native and free roaming New Forest ponies have traded their winter coats for foals which shadow their mothers as they graze the renewed pastures. Similarly, red, fallow and sika deer fawns arrive in spring. Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary is considered the best place to see the park's fallow deer and here we visit the purpose-built platform which overlooks a large meadow. We study the shape and form of these iconic deer and learn techniques to capture a moving animal by selecting the important information and translating it quickly onto paper.
Trevor will also teach us ways to capture the carpet of bluebells, spotlighted in areas by the sun's rays penetrating the canopy, yet shaded by the shadows of indomitable treetrunks in others. Over a series of demonstrations and workshops in the idyllic New Forest, you will learn and refine your watercolour painting.
