Luangwa & A Blizzard Of Bats

From: £Contact us

Join wildlife photographer Nick Garbutt to witness the extraordinary annual event of millions of fruit bats roosting in Kasanka National Park, coupled with a stay in South Luangwa, quite rightly regarded as the jewel of Zambia's extensive national parks network.

The world's largest mammal migration – that of the straw-coloured fruit bat – takes place each November when some ten million or more bats congregate in a two-hectare patch of mushitu (swamp) forest. Each day, as day turn to dusk, columns of bats come pouring out of the forest and disappear in great clouds across the sky to feed on fruit trees some 60 kilometres away. Each morning they return in the same gigantic waves to roost for the day in the swamp forest. Seeing this extraordinary event is to witness one of the world's greatest (and largely unsung) wildlife spectacles.

This tour combines time in Kasanka with an extended stay in South Luangwa National Park. Towards the end of the dry season and beginning of the 'green' season this region offers an unrivalled safari experience, with a wealth of wildlife including elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard, and a spectacular array of birdlife.

November is a particularly exciting period to be in South Luangwa. By then, the first rains have arrived and the park takes on a fresh flush of green and feeling of renewal predominates. Dust is washed from the atmosphere, clearing the air and often producing dramatic light for photography.
