Combine the power and beauty of the 'smoke that thunders' – as Victoria Falls is known in the local language – with the extravagant elegance of travelling to South Africa from Zimbabwe aboard arguably the world's most luxurious train, Rovos Rail's Pride of Africa. From Pretoria, you'll then fly to Cape Town for a final few days amid the stunning natural beauty and multifarious attractions of the Cape Peninsula.
Any aspect of this eleven-day sample itinerary can be tailored to suit your individual requirements by talking to one of our Southern Africa experts.
Day 1: Depart UK
Depart the UK an overnight flight, arriving on Day 2.
Days 2-4: Victoria Falls, Zambia
Once eclipsed by the Zimbabwean town of Victoria Falls, Livingstone has now emerged as the ideal base to witness one of the world's natural wonders. Just ten kilometres from Victoria Falls, it offers the stylish Royal Livingstone hotel, small and homely lodges, lively markets and operators offering everything from helicopter rides to bungee jumping and white-water rafting, almost all of which we'll be happy to arrange for you.
On arrival in Livingstone, you will be met and transferred to the 5-star Royal Livingstone hotel for a three-night stay. We have included three days in Livingstone to allow you to experience the main highlights of the area, including walks to the mighty falls themselves, visits to a local Mukuni village and day trips into Botswana's game-rich Chobe National Park.
Days 5-7: Travel to Pretoria with Rovos Rail
Transfer to the railway station in neighbouring Zimbabwe to begin your three-night Rovos Rail adventure.
Rovos Rail's unique journeys combine some of the most magnificent scenery in Africa with unparalleled accommodation, cuisine and service. Each train comprises a maximum of 20 coaches, all beautifully rebuilt in traditional Edwardian style. Gourmet chefs prepare outstanding meals enhanced by the finest South African wines, with supplementary dining requirements catered for by hostesses on duty around the clock.
Your three-night journey to the South African capital of Pretoria in the Pullman Suite will depart from Victoria Falls Station in Zimbabwe before travelling southeast towards Hwange National Park. On arrival in the park, disembark for a game drive at The Hide, before travelling along one of the world's longest stretches of railway to Bulawayo. Cross the border into Botswana in the evening. Finally, cross into the Tropics of Capricorn to Ramatalabama for border formalities with South Africa. Pass the beautiful South African countryside before arriving in the recently restored, colonial-style station of Capital Park in Pretoria.
Day 8: Pretoria, South Africa
You'll arrive in Pretoria in the afternoon and take a private transfer to your hotel, the boutique 5-star Illyria House, a magnificent villa with sweeping views, a fairytale ambience, fine antiques and white-gloved butlers providing unrivalled service.
Stay: Illyria House, Pretoria
Days 9-11: Cape Town
After a two-hour flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, you'll be whisked to the urban chic resort, One&Only Cape Town, the first luxury hotel to open in the Mother City for nearly a decade.
Like Sydney or San Francisco, Cape Town is one of the world's great cities and you'll have three whole days to get under its rainbow skin. Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain, a day trip to the lighthouse at Cape Point, where waves crash against the tip of a continent, or join a highly exclusive tour of the Winelands in the company of a distinguished connoisseur.
Day 12: Departure
Transfer to Cape Town's international airport for your overnight flight home.
Day 13: Arrive UK
Arrive back in the UK and continue your onward journey home.
