Along with Tasmania's rugged beauty and abundant wildlife comes some of the best food and wine Australia has to offer and no visit to the island would be complete without experiencing some of the many gourmet restaurants and world-class vineyards dotted throughout the state. This fly-drive holiday starts in the state capital Hobart before heading to the stunning Freycinet National Park, home to some wonderful wineries and superb seafood. The final night of the tour will be at the Quamby Estate, a sprawling homestead with one of Tasmania's best restaurants. We've also included stays at some of Tasmania's finest hotels, and suggested some fantastic optional touring to help you make the most of your Tasmania self-drive holiday.
Days 1-2: Depart the UK
Make the most of your included airport lounge access before your flight to Tasmania, arriving on day three.
Days 3-5: Hobart
Collect your hire car from Hobart Airport and check in to The Islington hotel. You'll have two full days to explore the city and its surroundings, and there are plenty of options to choose from. The waterfront is lined with beautiful Georgian buildings, while a day trip to Port Arthur – guarded by imposing cliffs – gives a sense of Tasmania's notorious past as a penal colony. Trips to the wineries of the Cole River Valley or a visit to Hobart's Cascade Brewery, the oldest in Australia, are other popular activities.
Days 6-7: Freycinet National Park
With a climate reminiscent of the south of France and some of the cleanest air and water in the world, Tasmania's east coast produces stunning, flavourful, cool-climate wines such as chardonnay and pinot noir. Fishermen come in daily with crayfish, scallops and deep-sea fish as well as succulent oysters, pulled by the dozen from the pristine waters of Great Oyster Bay. The bay is overlooked by the luxury lodge, Saffire Freycinet, your home for the next two nights, where chefs take full advantage of the region's rich produce. You luxury lodge offers easy access to beautiful Freycinet National Park, whose star attractions include the pinky-orange peaks of the Hazards Mountains and the perfect curve of Wineglass Bay.
Days 8-9: Quamby Estate (near Launceston)
For your final two nights, head north-west to the Quamby Estate, a lovingly restored 1830s homestead set on 64 acres with soaring ceilings, a wide flagstone veranda and yet another superb restaurant where sumptuous dishes are accompanied by local Tamar Valley wines. Continue to Launceston on day eight and return your hire car for your onward flight.
Day 10: Departure
Transfer to the airport in Launceston in time for your onward, overnight flight.
Day 11: Arrive UK
Arrive back in the UK after your overnight flight and continue your onward journey home.
Complimentary guided experiences at Saffire including Oyster tasting, wine tours, canoeing, bird watching, hikes and Tasmania Devil experience. Plus $100 resort credit
